About Hedding

ABOUT HEDDING

Hedding United Methodist Church has been worshiping God and growing disciples of Jesus Christ since the early 1800s, when our meeting house stood on what is now the city park.  Since that time we have occupied two other buildings, including the current facility located at 40 Washington Street which was built in 1895 and expanded in 1958.

The Hedding name is taken from Elijah Hedding, one of our early pastors, who went on to be a very important bishop in the early 1800s.  For more about our history see Hedding History.

OUR MISSION TODAY

Today, Hedding is anchored in the love of Jesus Christ in the City of Barre.  We seek to be a spiritual home for those on the journey of faith with Christ.  We offer a place of community and fellowship in which to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Our aim is actually to be the church of Jesus Christ, the living Body of Christ, in which we intentionally make disciples of Christ who are committed to Christ and the Church, and who not only confess their faith in Him, but commit to growing in spiritual formation so that we become more like Christ for the glory of God and as a witness to Christ for others.  We seek to live sacrificially so that we share in the work of Christ today in our real world context, and move toward holiness that reveals the love and Kingdom of God here in Barre.  For more on our covenant please see: Member Covenant.

BELONGING

Belonging at Hedding begins before membership.  We offer a variety of ways for you to belong to the community.  These give you space to explore your faith journey and Hedding without pressure, and with as much companionship as you would like.  See more on Belonging.

WONDERING IF HEDDING IS THE PLACE FOR YOU?

Finding a church home is more than being in a familiar place with familiar faces.  It is more than feeling welcome and cared for, although this is important, too.  Finding a church involves listening for God’s call in your life and being led to a discipleship and Christian life that God chooses for you.  We did not choose Christ, but Christ has chosen us.  We must simply respond to the love of Jesus. For more see Exploring Life at Hedding.

We invite you to come and pray, worship, study, serve and play with us while you listen for God’s calling in your life.  We invite you to take advantage of different ways of spiritual companionship, accountability, guidance and direction that Hedding has to share.  For more information , see Christian Growth

If Hedding is where the Lord would have you, we will work with you on the process of membership.  If it is not, we are happy to help you find another assembly of Christians where you might hear the call of God. We recognize that we are imperfect and that God uses many people to be the church of Jesus Christ, so we honor other Christians and their ways of serving Christ, trusting that our differences either glorify God or will be corrected by faithful prayer and conversation with one another.  To find out more about the churches of Barre see: Barre Church Directory.
